Located in Detroit Harbor on Washington Island, Kaps Marina offers a nautical escape that features Door County's natural splendor. Spend the summer enjoying the surrounding beauty of Washington Island with sand and rock beaches, fabulous fishing and gorgeous open water. Kaps Marina has been family owned and operated for over 40 years. Offering seasonal dockage only in 2023.
Always a pleasure dealing with Kevin and Keenan. Very personable and very helpful. When pulling the boat out at the end of the season, we discovered that the trailer had a flat tire. Kevin went above and beyond and fixed it right away. Highly recommended Kaps Marina.
Friendly people at the marina and the restaurant Excellent restaurant on site. Fried grouper and sides were delicious! Lots of assistance to dock, there to greet us and help us. Will go back
Staying at Kap's Marina is similar to staying at a rundown campground, there is very little maintenance done around the place, junk laying around, spider webs encasing the doorways/lights, weak wifi, no frills showers (one hook and a chair, no floor towel, not even a shelf to put your soap/shampoo on)
This place is awesome. The staff Is extremely helpful, friendly and made our family feel welcomed. They also have a restaurant with amazing food that is top notch. I can’t wait to go back.
Great little marina - staff is super helpful. This is a good home base from which to explore Washington island. We will definitely stay at Kaps again.
Kaps is now on our list of definite destinations each season. Staff is so friendly and helpful and the food is great at the Wagon Wheel. There is a new clothing shop - Do North - where I got very nice stuff that dries quickly. The walk to the main road is short and there are several ice cream shops. It’ fun to watch the ferries some and go, but it’s not in the thick of it so it is very quiet. Electrical is 50amp and adaptors are available. Wifi is good from the furthest slip. Keep your fenders low coming in and keep closer to the green buoy at the entrance. Easily handles 5.5 draught.
A great stay at the marina. Kevin was in contact with us prior to our arrival and waiting to catch our lines when we came in. Power is a long way so make sure you have an extention, not a problem for us. We rode our bikes to downtown and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Plenty of area to walk the pups. Enjoyed a peaceful night.
Lap’s marina is our favorite. A family run marina that makes you feel like family, you get to know them. Their restaurant right at the marina is fantastic. Best breakfast in the island and you want to be here Saturday nights for “Kevin’s famous prime rib.” Keep doing what you’re doing, we’ll be back soon. Bill Borland
Kevin and Barb are very accommodating and appreciative! They are quick to respond to anything needed. Bathrooms we’re very clean. Small family owned marina. Nothing fancy, but all we needed. We had 4 sailboats in our group. My wife really enjoyed our visit. That’s all I need to hear!👍😂We had a great dinner in their restaurant. Very good Door County Cherry pie and also cherry pancakes for breakfast!😋😋
We recently stayed at Kaps Marina as part of a 2 week cruise. It was by far the friendliest, most helpful stay of our trip. The staff, especially Kevin, Barb and Keenan, went out of their way to make us feel welcome. If you're ever at the end of the Door peninsula you should make a reservation and try some of Kevin's cherry pie!
Great communication prior to arrival. Helped with lines when we got there and provided pertinent info. on/in a informational brochure about what to do on island. Bathrooms/showers were clean. Great place to get away from the hustle... quiet and rustic and laid back. Even loaned us a car for a trip to store. Enjoyed our stay.
Even with a mere 5’2” draft, it’s a little close on the depth. But friendly and accommodating staff!
These guys went over the top Bead from Alpena. Mi
Marina is rustic, but well protected and the marina staff and Kevin were very helpful and provided outstanding service.
We love this marina, it’s usually pretty quiet, and there are close places for our dogs to swim. Rental cars available to explore the island.
Friendly staff Restaurant a must for breakfast Cool marina Cold 🍺
Perfect gem on the island. Everything you would expect and more. Nice people, clean and well kept bathrooms/showers. We really liked the restaurant next door for breakfast/dinner. Will be back. Thank you
Kap’s staff is very helpful. They were at the slip as we came to help with dock lines and shore power. Washrooms and showers were very clean. Their Ships Wheel restaurant had a prime rib special, excellent. Served good breakfast and only a short walk from the slips. The marina is very quiet. We had a great stay and will come pack I
We have begun our reverse direction Loop trip heading up to the North Channel first but couldn't resist stopping at Kapps for a final goodby. Everything went swimingly as usual. Barb and Kevin took good care of us, fed us those awesome Danish cherry pancakes and sent us on our way! We learned of the loss of a good friend, Will. He will be remembered. Highly recommend this place.
We really enjoyed our Stay at Kaps! Friendly and courteous staff as usual.
Washington Island is worth the trip. Kaps was OK. Showers and restrooms nice and clean. When we arrived, excellent service helping us get tied up. But, never saw any staff after our arrival. Docks are not very good and actually not sturdy. I would be very concerned with the stability of the docks in high winds. Utilities at the dock were good.
This was an awesome experience! It is a smaller, family run marina and restaurant, and Kevin, Keenan and Barb bent over backwards to accommodate all of our needs, and they are all so friendly and accommodating! Washington Island is a great little Bohemian kind of place, and the marina and restaurant are on of our absolute favorites! This is a can't miss stop when boating in the vicinity!
Easiest/closest marina on Washington Island to get to from Door County. Docking was simple. The staff is great. The restaraunt, The Ships Wheel is right there & very good. Close to bike & recreational vehicle rentals to use when exploring the island.
Great little family marina. Keenan and Kevin were super responsive and helpful getting us in and settled. We’re a deep keeled (6’9”) sailboat - Channels are deep enough. We got into our slip and settled into the mud near the bow. Not a problem. Easy in and out. Definitely have them connect you with Leo the local taxi man. He’s a real personality and great tour guide. The town is a few miles away, so getting a ride from Leo is advised.
Highly recommend! The owners went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our stay.
We were boating from Green Bay across Lake Michigan and decided at the last minute to stay an extra day because of weather. We called Keenan at Kaps and he found room for us. This is a very protected marina with nice slips. They were super helpful about the Island and very friendly. Not many family marina's left out there, but this one is certainly a gem!
Thoroughly enjoyed the marina. It is a simple, family owned business with fishing apparel store, bait store, and a very nice restaurant. Folks were very nice and accomodating.
Everyone there was just outstanding in every way. The marinia is owned by a wonderful family and they all work hard at making your stay a pleasure. The marina also rents Jeeps and you must tour the island, as there is so much to see and do.
Well protected Marina and friendly staff. We rented a jeep and toured the island. Highly recommend.
Locally, family owned, quaint marina located at the center of welcoming visitors to Washington Island next to the ferry docks. Super friendly, attentive staff willing to make any accommodation. Rentals next door for bicycles, jeeps, ATV, scooters etc for exploring. Even small aluminum boats, bait and tackle for fishing excursions in the bay.
You know it will be a great marina when Kevin, Barb and Keenan are waiting on the dock to grab lines with no previous communication. They also helped us in a mechanical pinch in a remote area which is priceless! Not to mention the bathrooms were clean everyday. Definitely coming back the next time we come across the lake from Michigan.
Always a pleasure, friendly staff that go above & beyond to do what they can.
A reminder of days gone by… simple pleasures and friendly people.
We were doing a return from Mackinac Island after the race...Kevin and Barb were so flexible...we pulled in after a 20 hour trek, they were so helpful! We had a great breakfast at the restaurant, showered, rested, and refueled. Both of our hosts were great and the marina worked perfectly for our journey home to Chicago! Thanks Kevin and Barb!
Kevin and Barb are extraordinarily accommodating hosts. We went to Kaps last year and had a wonderful time. We ended up there again this year, and it was again a great experience.
Great little place. The staff are all wonderful and go he extra mile to make sure you needs are taken care of. the food at their restaurant is amazing.
Friendly helpful staff. Limited facilities, one toilet, shower and urinal but clean. Dock was wobbly but level. A little pricey for what they offer but it is a Island. Nice location for touring the island. We took the Cherry Train tour, a two minute walk from marina.
The family owned and operated staff was very, very nice. The only way to communicate from water to them is by phone. They don’t use VHF radio. For smaller vessels, the marina is ok for navigating, but for larger vessels it’s tight. (51’) One must be careful entering the harbor from the main channel due to the narrow cut off of the main ferry channel. One must stern in (shorter docks) and you cannot back up too close to bank due to being shallow. The dock is fixed and a little narrow, but it works. From the dock you walk off onto a grass bank (geese feces everywhere) to the shore power pedestal and it was a good 30-35’ back from the swim platform. The location was beautiful and rustic, a little junky as island living causes residents to abandon items (vehicles, tires, etc.) rather than rid of them. The restaurant is not open every day, so check on that if it’s your thing. I give a 3-star at best. Glad we were here once, but little chance of returning.
we had an excellent time staying in the Marina and on the Island. Kevin and Barb were great hosts - we're excited to return hopefully later this summer!
Kaps is always good And the perfect place to experience Washington Island. Kevin, Keenan and Barb make sure you get in and are all settled with whatever you need and then they all help out at the restaurant, which is great. Great destination, so don't miss it!
Great people. Much to see and do on the island.
Clean bathrooms/showers, quiet and peaceful marina…we will be back!!
Everyone at the marina was wonderful to deal with.....very friendly and helpful. We decided to stay an extra night. Breakfast at the marina restaurant was also great. Washington Island is a very relaxed, unique experience. We will be back and we'll stay at Kaps. Note: I like the location which is near the ferry boat dock. It's interesting watching all the activity with the boats. Rob/Lynne Sabre 48
EXCELLENT! Wonderful family run business with genuinely nice people running the entire facility from the marina to the restaurant. Highly recommended!
This is a PERFECT island marina. These guys are on the ball and there for you every step of the way. I was very impressed with how attentive they were and accommodating. It is very quaint and friendly. I'm sure the beach is nice, but our weather was bad so we didnt get to use it. My 4 year old was able to play without me worrying because it's a dead end dirt parking lot. Restaurant had good food and at a great price. I really say say enough good things about this marina, and I cant wait to return again next year.
Staff were very friendly, personable and helpful. Enjoyed watching the ferries coming and going. Nearby restaurant, ‘The Ships Wheel’, made a great pizza. Enjoyed the nature preserve walking trails.
Nicest people! Very relaxing atmosphere. A true trip back in time feel w all the modern necessities! A new favorite!!!
The staff at Kapps is great. Nothing to fancy, but was perfect for our trip. They were waiting for us when we pulled in. We were able to take a shuttle into town and had a great meal at Nelsons. The facility is smaller, but worth a stop if your want a local experience on Washington Island
Kevin, Keenan and Barbara were stellar hosts at the marina! Looking forward to many more visits.
Nice place, good docks and power. Owners on site and very helpful
This is probably one of the most well protected marinas on the Great Lakes. They just put in all new electric last year (2019) and there is a nice bathroom and shower building as well as an excellent restaurant. Town is 3 miles away but the marina has rental cars and bicycles. The marina is on a point with a great view of nearby islands, enjoy the relaxed setting, great food and watch the twinkling lights from the lighthouses and navigational buoys.
Great experience! Awesome location and very nice family run business!!
It’s rustic, real rustic. Like a youth hostel in Reykjavík. Dance 10, looks 3. Kevin and Barb were so accommodating and helpful. The bathrooms were clean. They are super pricy and it’s 3 miles to anywhere, minimum. However the marina rents cars and bikes. The restaurant seemed nice inside but didn’t have a chance to eat there.
Washington Island is amazing! God’s beauty at its finest. The marina itself needs some TLC but it fits right on with the island ambiance, natural and rustic. Kevin (owners son) was EXTREMELY hospitable and a great host.
