The Black Dog Wharf

Everything was perfect for our short stay here at the Black Dog Wharf. Morgan was super friendly and helpful with the tie-up, and the Tavern right at the dock was excellent as well.

We were guided directly to our slip on arrival, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful, even coming aboard to assist with line handling, and then later assisting us to move to another berth due to rough weather, and they were very gracious throughout the entire stay. Top notch! They are there to assist you with everything you need for your stay. Thank you!

We had nice help with our lines as we arrived and departed, and the facilities on shore were good. Had a Jeanneau 44 ft sailboat.

The stay was great and the service was better. It was a very windy day and docking was tough. Morgan, the deckhand on duty was awesome. He calmly guided us in and helped tie us off. He was professional, courteous and friendly. He helped us leave as well as the wind only picked up. Black Dog Wharf should be proud of having Morgan on their team.

We selected The Black Dog Wharf primarily on the strength of prior ratings / reviews. The facility did not disappoint. Morgan, Brook, Rory, were helpful, friendly, and really helped to provide a welcoming experience. The bathroom and laundry facilities were always clean and fresh. With The Black Dog Tavern and coffee shop, central Vineyard Haven with many food and drink options and a Shop & Shop within yards, all of these options feel like an extension of the Wharf itself. Thanks again guys for a great week and see you next year. (And yes, as several reviewers have noted, I hesitated to comment as I would like the word to not get out on how awesome your facility is. However, I trust you will continue to excel!)

BDW was a happy accident. After staying in OB for 15+ years on our weekly MV vacation, I was unable to come up with a reservation this year. I chose Black Dog simply based on availability. Best Mistake I have made in years. Not only is the atmosphere much better for families, but the Black Dog Wharf was a fantastic operation. Brooke and his staff are amazing, attentive and understanding. The morning coffee and pastry was an added bonus. Most other reviews mention the clean bathrooms and great showers. I wont beat that dead horse, other to say their showers have better pressure than my home shower! Certainly will be back! ~ Knot Reel Teeth UPDATED 8/24 - The Black Dog continues to impress. The team there is courteous and attentive, always ready to lend a helping hand. Bathrooms are spotless as usual, and the vibe on the dock was relaxed, approachable and neighborly. Certainly will be returning regularly!

Our first time here but now a destination every year. All the reviews are accurate, without a doubt the most helpful and professional marina staff we’ve ever met. Brooke and Rory were amazing and set us up with fender boards at the dock. I even watched as a dockhand closed up for the night and heading up the dock stopped, put his stuff down, and readjusted someone’s fender lines. You don’t see that kind of dedication often. Plus the location can’t be beat.

this is a special place that i hope to visit again. the staff is super friendly, helpful, and professional. they were waiting for us and knew exactly how to secure our boat in the slip - expert dockmanship. food at the restaurant and bakery is not great, but you can’t beat the convenience. the little beach area is a great option for cooling off and entertaining the kids. bike rentals across the street make for an easy ride to proper beaches. this was our first trip to Martha’s Vineyard so i can’t compare it to other marinas, but the whole family had fun at The Black Dog. thanks to the entire team on the dock for the great experience!

First visit. Seemed small on dockwa... ok, we're open minded and ready for any adventure... Well, the morning of our arrival they (Brook) called me and said weather was tough and we might consider starting and arriving later in the day. (this was beyond expectations!!!!) We delayed a couple of hours but knew weather (wind) wasn't on our side so we headed out... it was not great, but we took our time... When we arrived, what a pleasant surprise to find one of the most cozy, welcoming, and friendly marinas we've ever been too! Not sure when we'll get back to MV but Black Dog will be our place of choice! First class all around. Oak Bluffs and Edgartown are bigger and busier...if that's for you.

Brooke was so helpful when we arrived making sure we were tied up correctly. Had a problem with electric but it was fixed immediately. Our Granddaughter was married on the Shenandoah Saturday afternoon and it went off without a hitch. Thank you so much and the muffins are delicious!

After a really rough ride in Brook was amazing getting us tied up. He and all the staff are so amazingly welcoming and friendly and had some great company on the docks. You honestly couldn’t ask for a better location for everything you might need or want to do! Restaurants, bike rentals, beaches, swimming, all literally steps away and super easy transportation on island, public and private to get to Oak Bluffs or Edgartown. I actually am hesitant to post this review as I want to make sure we can get in here again next season! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

We absolutely love staying at the Black Dog Wharf. We always tended too when docking and great information given to help us out. While staying for 2 nights, we decided to stay a 3rd and it was no issue at all. Even upon leaving we asked to stay an extra hour to help with timing the currents and they were so accommodating. Will be back over and over.

I will start by saying the Black Dog staff was excellent and super friendly! We stayed on the mooring. It was all tangled when we arrived and they came right out to untangle it. We didn't realize there was only one mooring and it is right next to the ferry so it is loud. We also didn't know the launch, which is a stones throw from the mooring, wasn't complimentary. We ended up paying $20 round trip for a 30 second ride. With the price of the mooring, we had assumed the short ride was included, otherwise we would have just dropped the dinghy. The launch driver smashed into the side of our boat when coming to pick us up and was quite unpleasant. It was made clear he wasn't happy to be working yesterday. It made us pretty uncomfortable. Once we got on the dock, as mentioned the black dog staff was great. The bathrooms and shower were clean and the muffins were delicious. It seems most of the reviews are for docking, which I'm sure is fabulous. I just wouldn't recommend the mooring. Or if you do stay on the mooring, use your dinghy for the short ride to shore.

This is the 3rd time I've stayed here this summer. Great helpful staff and the location is perfect.

Our favorite harbor on the island! Great place to explore with many things to do ie.. shopping,museum,wooden boat building and restoration,a Stop & Shop for provisioning. The Black Dog staff weather at the dock restaurant or bakery couldn’t be more accommodating if they tried.

On an island full of tourists, it is hard to maintain a helpful and positive attitude. The Black Dog make you feel wanted. Good bathrooms and showers. Never had a bad meal at the tavern either. ❤️

We have now stayed at The Black Dog Wharf twice this summer. The staff is great and the marina is well maintained. The bathrooms with showers are convenient and clean. We really enjoying staying here and recommend you do as well!

Dock master and crew were fantastic. Got us set up with a dock step (due to fixed dock) and could not have been more accomodating. Even suggested we leave a day early due to an expected Nor’easter, to which the Wharf is exposed.

We had the best time at this marina. It was very quiet, the dock hands were awesome. We were able to swim right off the boat, float on our rafts. Walk up into town. We ate on the boat so can’t say anything about any restaurants. However the black dog cafe was right there for our coffee and muffin. ( you get one or the other but not both, marina gives coupon upon arrival ) stop and shop is a quick walk if you need anything. Bathroom were very clean, two showers two toilets. Very hot not even a fan! The washer and dryer is located inside here too.( need quarters ) please put a fan in bathrooms!!!!!! Oak bluff is 3 miles away. Taxi was 17.00 and you can grab right there . This was such a quiet lovely marina and honestly now our favorite. Can’t wait to go back!!!

Staying at Black Dog Wharf is always one of the highlights of cruising New England. Warm and friendly while helpful and competently accommodating. The setting is idyllic, with excellent on-site facilities, and also close to restaurants, shopping, and transportation. We can't say much more or I fear we'll never get in.

Fantastic little spot to stop. Great bath and laundry facilities, free pastry from the cafe each morning, and easy access to everything. We prefer this location to busier spots like Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.

The owners are amazing, breakfast great and the immediate area is superb (lots of amenities and food choices). We'll definitely return just to see them! Not 5 stars, just because the barn next door was rocking and loud till really late, then there were dinghy motors revving, etc. Also, not a calm location when there is a north wind, fyi.

The dock was conveniently located in proximity to the the transportation center where we were able to catch a bus and visit Oak Bluffs snd Edgartown. There’s a West Marine Express about two blocks away and a Stop And Shop grocery store a half block away. The dock master was great handling lines and accommodating our needs. The bathrooms, showers snd laundry facility was very clean. Worthy of five stars but a worthy of NOTING… this is a “dry” town and the “Black Dog Tavern” sells drinks with a meal.

Very nice … we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. Absolutely the best facilities, cleanest bathrooms and OMG theee BEST showers in the Northeast!! Beautiful tiles, modern fixtures, extremely private… Class A all the way. Well, in full disclosure, it could have been a tad better for us, as we requested a slip with a little bit of privacy since we were celebrating our anniversary- ironically we ended up in their least private slip- directly in front of the office, with all the bustling activity, customers waiting to board launches out to moorings or the beautiful schooners offered for daily/sunset cruises (which by the way is a must on any visit to MV!) So bottom line- if you prefer an active style marina experience, this place is the only place to be. If you prefer a more quiet, peaceful experience, then pray you score one of their other slips further away from the tourist activity. I completely recommend this marina as the conveniences are endless… historic Black Dog Tavern right on the wharf waterfront- tons of shops, coffee/bakery and large chain supermarket directly across the street. You are only a 5 minute walk to Vineyard Haven’ s quaint shopping thoroughfare with dozens of “nicer” shops, restaurants and even a family-owned pharmacy. The best part is the fuel dock within a stone’s throw and even a West Marine store a block away! When docking in Vineyard Haven, The Black Dog Wharf is the best by far. Brooke, Morgan and family were gracious hosts, very helpful with docking, etc. The entire operation is warm and friendly. I just wish we had a tad more privacy! Thanks for a memorable vacation! You can’t do better than the Black Dog Wharf. Super service from the friendly staff. Everything you could possibly need is right at your fingertips: Black Dog Bakery, Tavern, and retail shop; Stop and Shop a 3-minute walk; excellent fish market; and restaurants and shopping very close by. If you have bikes it’s a great ride out around West Chop. Bonus: swimming beach right at the dock. We were able to swim right off the boat. Enjoyed watching the ferries and the launch come & go. It’s quiet and scenic. Yes, they serve alcohol in Vineyard Haven restaurants but be sure to bring your own adult beverages for the boat. There is not a package store in town-you have to go to Oak Bluffs. Otherwise, perfection! We’ll be back.

The BD Wharf is quaint and convenient. You’re able to watch the ferries come and go and in spite of the boat traffic it is quite peaceful. Small beach at foot of pier is nice but restaurant uses it for service so you wouldn’t spend the day there. If you don’t have a dingy or don’t rent a car to explore the island you’re limited to what you can do given the location. Facilities are small but clean.

We stay at The Black Dog Wharf often. The staff are welcoming and pleasant. The dock is quiet at sunset. All amenities are clean and well kept. All of Vineyard Haven is short walk from this Marina.

What a great stay. Morgan and the crew/family were super attentive in helping us get setup. We were Double-handed coming in and they were extra helpful in getting settled in after hours. Communication was great. Little perks like the Coffee/Muffin breakfast every morning was a nice touch. Bathrooms super nice, laundry facilities worked a charm. Weather shift on our last day and the BDW team helped relocate us to a more sheltered setup, and were very proactive in our comfort and safety. This was our first time at The Black Dog Wharf. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay from beginning to end. Rory assisted us and was proficient at handling all aspects of securely docking. He was most helpful—overseeing all of our needs. The owner is also a very charming and professional man and came to our dock several times throughout the day to make sure we were doing well and not in need of anything. We have been on our sailing trip for 2 weeks and we have another 2 weeks to go. I had been unable to find laundry facilities prior to our dockage at The Black Dog. However, I was thrilled when Rory informed me there were on-site laundry facilities. I immediately dashed there to find a wonderfully large and accommodating room, also with great shower facilities. It was so clean and welcoming and what a pleasure to do all of our laundry so quickly and efficiently. It made my day! The Wharf is so inviting —a beach, picnic tables, and nice docks. We were on the face dock and were enraptured by the stimulating activity and beautiful boats in the harbor— lovely scenes!! And then we had a delicious dinner on the patio of The Black Dog Tavern right beyond the dock. We also got cards for complimentary donuts and muffins and coffee. The donuts were fab! All staff, management and guests adhered to the safety and sanitary measures. We felt secure all of our time there. The docks were quiet and still at night and we got a wonderful night’s sleep. All in all, it was a stellar experience!! Thank You, Black Dog Wharf, we shall return again and again.

Small and quiet when we were there, the last week of July. Staff was friendly and helpful, bathrooms were clean. The nonfloating docks weren’t as bad as I thought they would be.

Dock staff were very attentive, helped us get into the slip and tie up. We had a slip with 2 pilings about 30 ft from the dock that you tie spring lines to. The marina and surrounding Black Dog area are absolutely beautiful! Will stay here again.

Location is nice with Black Dog Restaurant and Bike Rental across street. Easy access to Oak Buffs. They are strict about arrival and Departure times. Docks are well kept and dock hands available.

Great location in center of Vineyard Haven. Docks not floating but they bring you boards for bumpers. Ferry's right next door. Car and bike rentals just off dock. Expensive but worth it

We stayed about a week at the Black Dog Wharf. The folks there were really helpful and the boat was safe and sound on the days we hung out on Island. The location in the harbor was perfect — protected and an easy hop into MV sound. Once off the boat, it was a little removed. We are one night at the restaurant there which was very good. I would recommend this spot for sure.

We had a wonderful week. We were traveling with another boat and they couldn’t get reservations for the entire time but Black Dog was able to accommodate us in the end.

Bottom line, best boating experience, attentive and proactive dock, fantastic restaurant experiences within walking distance, quiet and nice slip neighbors. My wife and I had a great weekend and look forward to returning soon!

Our favorite Island to visit! We stayed for 4 nights this time. Plenty of new beaches and plenty of flea markets to keep my family busy. We've been staying at the Black Dog for the past three years and will continue to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of Vineyard Haven and the proximity to provisions and transportation.

Marina is well located and staff is friendly. Bathrooms are fairly clean, but tired. Very important to tie up with bow out to harbor.

We had a wonderful three days at the Black Dog. The staff was, as always, very helpful and eager to make the stay as good as possible. My only suggestion would be to make the dock a non smoking environment. Depending on the wind direction, the smoke is unavoidable. Especially annoying while sitting in or on the boat. Of course, more unhealthy for those smoking but their choice. I prefer smoke free as do most people.

We loved our stay at the Black Dog Wharf! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. The facilities were clean and cute. We will definitely be back.

Had Great stay at Black Dog Wharf! It was such nice location with beautiful views of Vineyard Haven Marina. We loved watching all the boats and ferries come in and out, and there was lots of fun restaurants and cute shops! The staff was amazing! Morgan, Camden, and Tony were so available and helpful thru our entire 4 day stay esp when the weather and winds changed. They notified us before it hapoened, and helped us secure our boat to prevent any damages. We will absolutely return to Black Dog Wharf, and highly recommend staying here. Colleen S

It’s a nice place. Very well maintained facilities. A nice restaurant next to the dock serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Electricity is extra if you need to plug in.

We had a wonderful stay at the Black Dog. The staff was helpful and very friendly. Bathrooms and showers were very clean and modern. The washer and dryers were nice to use. Ice is available. It was a rainy day, but the dock hand replied immediately to our hail when we arrived. Easy to dock, they even provides some fenders. The shower facilities are above average. The food at the tavern was awesome. Definitely will be coming again.

reasonable. they need a dock hand who knows how to handle lines and tie a boat The kid who was there did not even know how deep is the marina. That is unacceptable

Great yearly visit for a week at Black Dog. The service from the dock crew make it a great place to stay. Makalia really is so attentive and kind, she always has her "A" game on and always looks for something to do to make everyone's stay better. All the crew is really good though, most important to the boaters are clean bathrooms and trash containers emptied. They do all that and more. Always there to help you tie up and get underway. Thanks again, great job everyone at the BD Warf. See you next year!!!!

Just returning from weekend stay at this marina. more negatives than positives. To begin with, we had reserved a slip a month in advance. When we got in it was around 5 or 6 PM and they had us stay in a slip next to part of the dock that was missing a board. It was actually quite dangerous at times as we had windy choppy seas one day. The dockhand seemed unconcerned from start to finish. My husband actually fell when getting off boat one evening. Next were the state of the bathrooms. There were just two unisex stalls for the whole marina. A huge issue we had were the groups of young marina and tall ship employees that congregated in and used the same facility. We had to listen to them chat about getting drunk and partying every time we waited in line in evening. They even joked about the party in the bathroom. The restaurant was understaffed both times we went. Food was not bad, but we waited close to an hour to be served both dinner and breakfast. Wait staff were apologetic but frazzled. The next problem to be disregarded was when one bathroom was clogged. We had to complain twice before one of them picked the phone up. Lastly when I asked to speak to the manager before we left he was out on a boat. When the staff realized we were not happy and were going to complain they scrambled to help us. Too little too late. We will never stay there again. No management, no supervision of employees, no organization.
